About cross stitches

The first stitches I have ever made were at kindergarten. My Mum still has a book cover I have embroidered there. A little bit later, I got quite addicted to cross stitches. But there came the point where I didn't want to follow any patterns. That was the moment when I started "free" embroidery, about 25 years ago. But from time to time, I still do some cross stitches.

This model is from a kit. I can't even remember where and when I found it, but it's based on the work of the German illustrator Janosch. I added some finishing touches by putting the name, birth date and some borders and it became a present for a friend's baby boy.

When I came across this free pattern offered by Les Brodeuses Parisiennes, I couldn't resist, I had to stitch it for my friend Becky and her Vintage Fairy Tale Cottage. I adore her and her work.

This is the first real big one I made. I started it in maternity hospital, after having given birth to my son Jonas, who will turn 28 this summer, and I finished it right away.

This model and all the others below are from an old German magazine called Für Sie. Many years ago Für Sie published a special edition filled with patterns for babies and small kids. There were jumpers, pullovers, toys, these embroideries and much more.

This one has been been sleeping for years in a wardrobe. I also made it for my son. 

Well, and then there is always unfinished stuff, but I'll finish it once, promise...

An apple a day...

Some years ago, I found this knitted apple in a Japanese magazine.

I added some embroidery on a litte piece of fabric.

You may put in your paper handkerchief.

It's about phantasy. In our heads anything is possible and flowers may grow in the sky. But there is also this scary side. The moment when you are going to the cellar and you do fear to look behind the door...

Das Autogramm ist von John Howe, einem der bedeutendsten Illustratoren der Werke Tolkiens. Vor ein paar Jahren bin ich ihm auf einer Veranstaltung begegnet. Seine Illustrationen sind unglaublich, er selbst aber ganz bescheiden.

Some years ago, this autograph was given to me from John Howe. He is best known for illustrating Tolkien's work. His illustrations are incredible, but he himself was a very modest person.

This is a matter of the heart - Dies ist eine Herzensangelegenheit

There are still some of these old woven pillow cases in my wardrobe. As I weaver I really do like their texture, but I also love these old buttons, covered with fabric.

I stitched an old lace onto it and embroidered the German words: Dies ist eine Herzensangelegenheit, which means "This is a matter of the heart" in English. And I added some crocheted hearts.

Zum Glück habe ich immer noch einige dieser alten gewobenen Kopfkissenbezüge im Schrank. Als Weberin mag ich diese Strukturen, aber auch diese alten stoffbezogenen Knöpfe.

Ein Stück alte Spitze, die gestickten Worte "Dies ist eine Herzensangelegenheit" und ein paar selbst gehäkelte Herzen.....

Advent Calendar

Two hearts crocheted together, a little piece of vichy fabric, embroidered with numbers from 1 to 24.  Ready is my advent calendar, filled with tiny treasures. And off they go, to hopefully please two dear friends.

Zwei zusammen gehäkelte Herzen, ein Stück Vichykaro, bestickt mit Nummern von 1 bis 24. Fertig ist mein Adventskalender, gefüllt mit kleinen Schätzen. Und ab die Post damit.

Rainer Maria Rilke - for a friend

Although they are very simple, I love my first handmade stamps. Stamped and embroidered onto an old handkerchief, I made this envelope for a friend. 

Meine ersten selbst gemachten Stempel. Obwohl sie ganz einfach sind, mag ich sie. Ein altes Taschentuch bestempelt und bestickt und als Umschlag zusammen genäht. 

I also love these old coloured children's book. This page is from an old song book. The embroidery shows a quote from Rainer Maria Rilke: "This is the miracle that happens every time to those who really love: the more they give, the more they possess."

Ganz besonders aber mag ich diese alten kolorierten Kinderbücher. Diese Seite stammt aus einem alten Liederbuch. Ich habe eine Zitat von Rainer Maria Rilke darauf gestickt: "Je mehr Liebe man gibt, desto mehr besitzt man davon."

Stitched Narratives - Gestickte Erzählungen

This linnen nightgown was given to me by the farmer my parents bought their house from. It belonged to his mother, I don't know her first name, but her family name was Müller. Aged between 14 and 20, I wore it a lot and I kept it all these years. That's why I brought it to Jessie's workshop, to tell my narrative and I was pretty glad that it wasn't necessary to cut it.

 

Dieses Leinennachthemd habe ich von dem Bauern bekommen, von welchem meine Eltern ihr Haus gekauft haben. Es gehörte seiner Mutter, ihren Vornamen kenne ich nicht, aber ihr Familienname war Müller. Zwischen 14 und 20 habe ich es viel getragen und es all die Jahre behalten. Um meine Geschichte zu erzählen, habe ich es zu Jessies Workshop mitgebracht und ich war ziemlich froh, dass ich es nicht zerschneiden musste.

Kokeshi gri-gri

Kleiner Glücksbringer aus dem Buch "Japon au point de croix" von Anne Sohier-Fournel, für Tady, meine Japanliebhaberin. Bin noch nicht so weit, war ein bisschen faul. Und für Franziska wird es ein blaues Kokeshi geben.

Small talisman for Tady, my sweet sixteen Japanese fan. From the book "Japon au point de croix" by Anne Sohier-Fournel. I didn't work a lot on it, because I was a bit lazy. And there will be a blue Kokeshi for Franziska.

Thomas, a colleague and friend of mine, left our team to go travelling around Tanzania and Cameroon, where he also wants to learn about a special cast-bronze technique. I wanted to offer him something unique, so I made this talisman for him, to wish him and his family a good journey. I got the inspiration from the book "Japon au point de croix", Anne Sohier-Fournel, Made in Marabout, where I copied the front of the embroidery, but the back side is free embroidery.



Thomas, ein Kollege und Freund, hat unser Team verlassen, um durch Tansania und Kamerun zu reisen, wo er auch eine spezielle Bronzegusstechnik erlernen möchte. Ich wollte ihm etwas ganz Individuelles schenken, deshalb habe ich diesen Glücksbringer gemacht. Damit die Reise für ihn und seine Familie unter vielen guten Sternen steht. Inspiriert wurde ich von dem Buch "Japon au point de croix", Anne Sohier-Fournel, Made in Marabout, aus welchem ich die Vorderseite habe. Die Rückseite ist freie Stickerei.



Thomas, un collègue et ami, a quitté notre équipe pour aller voyager en Tanzanie et Cameroun, où il veut apprende une technique spéciale de la fonte de bronze. Je voulais lui offrir quelque chose individuelle, donc j'ai fait ce gri-gri, en souhaitant à lui et sa famille, un bon voyage. Le livre "Japon au point de croix", Anne Sohier-Fournel, Made in Marabout, m'a inspiré et j'ai copié le devant, mais l'envers est de la broderie libre.
